Antifreeze for Subaru Legacy
Most Legacys in Georgia arrived through US auctions with unknown service histories. In practice that means one thing: the system holds whatever someone once poured in, and often not what a Subaru needs.

Photographs come from the manufacturer's official materials.
Cooling system volume (litres) roughly six to eight litres
How to tell the system needs flushing
Open the expansion tank on a cold engine and look:
- Murky or brown colour. The inhibitors are exhausted, or there is rust in the system.
- Something floating on the surface. A sign of mixed chemistries.
- Sediment at the bottom. Either silicate dropout or scale.
- An oily film. Oil may be entering the system, which is a diagnostic matter.
The first three call for a complete flush. Pouring fresh fluid into a dirty system is money wasted.
Frequently asked questions
US-imported Legacys often have orange fluid. What should I do?
Orange is usually a Dex-Cool type containing 2-EHA, which is the wrong choice for a Subaru. Flush the system completely and refill with a blue, silicate-free and 2-EHA-free fluid.
