Seven mistakes that damage engines
Coolant is one of those fluids owners think about least and get wrong most. Below are the seven mistakes mechanics see most often.
1. Topping up with water “temporarily”
The level dropped, somebody added a litre of water and forgot. In a seven-litre system that takes a 50/50 mix down to roughly 43 per cent, and freeze protection falls from −36 °C to about −27 °C.
What to do instead: adding water temporarily beats driving on a low level, but note it down and restore the ratio soon. And more importantly, find out why the level dropped.
2. Filling with neat concentrate
The logic seems sound: stronger must be better. In reality neat glycol carries heat far worse than water, and neat antifreeze freezes at a higher temperature than a 70 per cent mix.
What to do instead: always dilute in a separate container before filling. Honda states this explicitly in the manual.
3. Mixing two different fluids
“There was no blue, so I poured in orange.” The inhibitor packages neutralise each other, and sometimes a precipitate forms.
What to do instead: if you have already mixed them, flush the system completely. If you have not, do not.
4. Draining only the radiator
The radiator plug releases only part of the system. The rest stays in the block, the heater core and the hoses, often a third of the total volume.
What to do instead: open the block drain too if there is one, and keep the heater on while flushing.
5. Opening the cap on a hot engine
This is a safety matter, not a technical one. In a hot system the fluid is under pressure and above 100 °C. Opening the cap drops the pressure instantly, the fluid flashes to steam and erupts.
What to do instead: wait until it is fully cold. If it is urgent, cover the cap with a cloth and open it slowly, in stages.
6. Skipping the bleed
An air pocket causes local overheating and gives the temperature sensor a false reading: the gauge reads normal while the engine boils.
What to do instead: run the engine with the cap off and the heater on full until the fan cycles, adding fluid as the level drops.
7. Diluting with mineral water
“Water is water” does not hold. Mineral and spring water contain calcium and magnesium, which deposit as scale and degrade heat transfer.
What to do instead: use distilled or demineralised water. Clean tap water is permitted by the manufacturer, mineral water is not.
