The coolant level is dropping, where does the fluid go
A cooling system is closed. Coolant does not burn and does not disappear on its own, so if the level is dropping, the fluid is either leaving the system or going into the engine. Each case has its own signs, and they are not equally urgent.
First make sure the level really dropped
The expansion tank carries two marks, MIN and MAX, and the level should sit between them. It matters that you check on a cold engine. On a hot car the fluid expands and the level naturally sits higher, then falls back once it cools.
If the fluid was changed recently, a small drop during the first week is normal. That is air left in the system working its way out. In that case simply top up with ready mix at the same ratio.
The sign of a real problem is a level that needs topping up once a month or more often.
Where it leaks most often
When it leaks outward, the fluid often lands on a hot surface and evaporates at once, so you may find no puddle in the car park at all. What remains instead is a dry crust, a pale or coloured trace.
- Hose clamps. The most common and the cheapest cause.
- The radiator's plastic tanks. The seam against the metal starts weeping after years.
- The water pump's weep hole. A drip there means the seal has worn.
- The thermostat housing. Often a gasket is all it takes.
- The expansion tank and its cap. A crack in the tank is fine and leaks only under pressure.
- The heater core. A sweet smell in the cabin and an oily mist on the glass are the first signs.
The heater core is a case of its own: the fluid goes into the cabin and nothing shows outside.
When the fluid goes into the engine
This is the more serious case and usually means a head gasket or a warped head. The signs are these:
- White, sweet-smelling vapour from the exhaust that does not clear once the engine is warm.
- Brown or milky emulsion under the oil cap.
- Bubbles in the expansion tank with the engine running.
- The level drops and there is nothing to be seen outside.
- After cooling, fluid is not drawn back from the tank.
If two or more of these match, the job is diagnosis, not fresh coolant. We say this plainly: no coolant can repair a leaking gasket. The right fluid is prevention, not repair.
How to find the leak, step by step
- Check the level on a cold engine and mark it on the tank with a pen. A week later you will know exactly how much it has lost.
- Lay cardboard under the engine overnight. In the morning the colour and position of any stain will tell you a lot.
- Go over the engine bay with a torch on a cold car. Look for dry crust around hose clamps, along the radiator seam and on the thermostat housing.
- Turn the heater on and smell the cabin. A sweet smell or mist on the glass points to the heater core.
- Open the oil cap and look for milky emulsion on its underside.
- Run the engine with the cap off and watch for bubbles rising in the tank.
- If you find nothing, have a workshop pressure-test the system. That procedure finds even a fine crack.
Until you find the cause, top up with ready mix at the same ratio rather than with plain water. Water dilutes the mixture and costs you winter protection.
