Antifreeze for the Lexus NX

The NX comes with two very different engines: the turbocharged 2.0 petrol in the NX 200t and the hybrid system in the NX 300h. The coolant is the same for both, pink SLLC, meaning Valvoline Zerex Asian Red.

Cooling system volume (litres) roughly six to seven litres

A turbo engine and the boiling margin

On the 8AR-FTS turbo engine the coolant also serves the turbocharger housing. After shutdown the local temperature climbs further, and that is exactly when the boiling point starts to matter.

At 50/50 Valvoline Zerex Asian Red boils at 128 °C with a standard 15 psi cap, and at 133 °C when mixed 60/40. Plain water boils at 100 °C.

The NX 300h and its second reservoir

The hybrid NX has a separate inverter circuit with its own reservoir and electric pump. Its fluid is the same pink type and its level should be checked periodically.

One bottle at 50/50 yields 7.5 litres, which covers the NX engine circuit. Take two if you are also changing the inverter circuit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the NX turbo engine need a special fluid?
No, the specification is the same pink SLLC. On a turbo engine, system cleanliness and a healthy cap simply matter more.
