Antifreeze for the Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 is one of the most common US imports in Georgia, in both petrol and hybrid form. The factory Super Long Life Coolant is pink, so the right product is Valvoline Zerex Asian Red.

Cooling system volume (litres) roughly six to seven litres, plus the inverter circuit on the hybrid

A family SUV works the hardest duty cycle

A RAV4 is rarely driven empty. A full cabin, luggage, air conditioning running all day in summer and Tbilisi traffic together create a load that the factory service interval assumes for a milder climate.

The A/C condenser sits in front of the radiator and feeds it air that is already warm. This is exactly why boiling point matters: at 50/50 with a 15 psi cap that figure is 128 °C, while plain water boils at 100 °C.

The RAV4 Hybrid has a second reservoir

Besides the engine circuit, the hybrid has a separate loop for the inverter and power electronics, with its own reservoir and electric pump. Toyota specifies the same pink type for both.

The passages in the inverter heat exchanger are narrow, so any deposit there immediately shows up in heat transfer. The red Zerex is silicate-free at under 10 ppm silicon and is hard-water compatible.

Leave the inverter circuit to a specialist, because bleeding it is a procedure of its own.

Frequently asked questions

Is one bottle enough for a RAV4?
On the petrol version yes, since one bottle yields 7.5 litres at 50/50 and the system holds six to seven. On the hybrid, take two if you are also changing the inverter circuit.
